Trim styles

Same wall. Four different houses.

Trim sets the style of a room more than almost anything else. Pick one and watch the wall change.

Craftsman

Flat, wide and honest. A thick cap over the door and tall, flat baseboard. Portland's bungalows were built on it.

Typical sizes for the style. We match what your house already has, or mill a profile to match.

Design concept illustration, not a finished project.

What we build

Everything after the drywall, before the paint.

Baseboard & casing

New trim through the house, or matching what's there after a remodel.

Crown molding

Coped inside corners, so the joints stay closed through the seasons.

Wainscoting

Board and batten, raised panel, beadboard and shiplap walls.

Built-ins

Bookcases, window seats, mudroom benches and closet shelving, built in place.

Interior doors

Hung plumb and square, with even gaps and hardware that latches.

Stair parts

Treads, risers, railings and balusters, made safe and solid.

Window trim

A sill and apron under the window, or trim all the way around it. For new and old windows.

Mantels & beams

Fireplace mantels and box beams, sized to the room.

Paint by our own crew, if you want it (painting). Any electrical in a built-in is done by a licensed electrician.

The details

What separates good trim from good enough.

Coped inside cornersOne piece cut to the shape of the other, so the joint doesn't open when the house moves.
Scribed to the real wallOld walls aren't straight. We cut trim to follow them, so there's no gap to fill with caulk.
Even revealsThe same small step between casing and jamb on every door, all the way around.
Ready for paintNails set and filled, joints glued, caulked where it belongs. Your painter starts painting, not fixing.

Questions

What people ask first.

Can you match the trim I already have?

Usually. Most profiles are still made. When yours isn't, we show you the closest options, or the cost of having it made, before we start.

What's the difference between paint-grade and stain-grade?

Paint-grade trim is made to be painted, so joints can be filled and hidden. Stain-grade is solid wood with a clear finish, so every joint shows and has to be cut perfectly. It costs more for that reason.

Do you paint the trim too?

We can, or we leave it ready for your painter: nail holes filled, joints caulked and sanded smooth.

Do I need to empty the room?

Just clear the walls and anything fragile. We move furniture away from the walls and cover the floors before we start.

Walk-through

Show us the room. We'll bring the tape.

We look at what's there, talk through the style you want, and quote it piece by piece.
